About

Harambee Free Play for high school
 Harambee Sports Club

Since 2019, Harambee Sports Club has offered quality sports-based youth development programs to thousands of young people in the Twin Cities Metro.

The mission of Harambee Sports Club is to empower young people by nurturing their confidence, fostering essential skills, and unlocking their full potential.

Through the transformative power of sports, we aim to cultivate leaders who actively contribute to building a more inclusive, equitable, and vibrant society.

Harambee Sports Club is a 501c3 nonprofit that supports diversity, equity and cultural humility in youth sports. Harambee is a Swahili word that translates to “working or pulling together.” We see sports as an engaging and challenging experience that must support youth with positive role models and provide them with opportunities to create connections with each other and their communities.

After nearly 25 years of coaching youth sports and activities, Coach Pete Munene saw a need to be more intentional about youth development best practices, social emotional learning (SEL), and supporting socio-economically diverse families in the sports experiences that were being offered to youth in the Twin Cities. Harambee Sports Club began offering programming in the fall of 2019.

Harambee Sports Club offers sports and activities  primarily for middle and high school students and occasionally for K-5 and 18+ audiences. Our programming has included Free Play, Teams, Training/Skill-Building, Tournaments and Camps across a range of activities including futsal, soccer, volleyball, ultimate frisbee, pickleball, badminton, strength and conditioning, and chess.

Harambee Sports Club drop-in, one-day, multi-week and months-long programs have had attendance of over 1000 people over the calendar year. Our programs draw diverse youth from over 70 Twin Cities zip codes and families speaking over 20 different languages at home.
